The Gow School Teacher's College

2014-June 3
by Nick Randell, Program Officer

Last summer we challenged seven non-profits whose work focuses on learning differences to come up with a couple of new ideas for helping young people with dyslexia and similar challenges.   The goal was that the Foundation would gain some insight into what leaders in the field thought was needed and, in return, would fund one of their ideas to the tune of $50,000.

One of those ideas, the Gow School's Teacher's College, is coming to life in a few weeks.   Gow, located on a rural campus in Wales NY, is a residential, college preparatory school for young people (grades 7-12) with dyslexia.  The boarding school continues to be a boy's school, but the newer day school is co-ed.  Across five sessions this July, Gow faculty will share their instructional methodologies with a broader community of educators.

I met recently with Gayle Hutton, Director of Development, to talk about Gow's Teacher's College.  Gayle told me they were excited by the opportunity to offer the community an introduction to a range of teaching techniques and tools including Reconstructive Language, flipped classrooms, iPads for learning math, constructive writing, even 3D industrial design. A one-day session on preparing your child for college is also sure to be popular.  According to Gayle, interest in the workshops has been high.  "Our July 7-8 session on Multisensory Reading Instruction is already full, with about a dozen people on a waiting list.  We have a number of out-of-state registrants, including one from California."  She urges anyone interested in registering for remaining sessions to do so soon.  "The content is about the state-of-the-art in teaching for these kids, and to top it all off, participation is free," Gayle adds.

The instructional day runs from 8:30 - 4:00, with lunch provided.
